As we experience yet another vernal equinox the ancient Earth awakens from the winters sleep. The music for tonights show brings ancient rhythms via Inuit drum songs from Greenland, jojk from above the Arctic Circle and ancient harp (kantele) music from Karelia, Estonia and Latvia. Sami artists Marit Hætte Øverli and her group Jienat along with Nikko Valkeapää (born in Enontekiö, Finland and residing now in Kautokeino, Norway) offer traditional and modern settings of jojk. Inuit drum singer Kigutikaq Duneq and Northern Voices (Christian Vuust and Tobias Sjögren) bring ancient story songs from Greenland. The Karelian Folk Music Ensemble and Estonian artist Kirili Loo bring music and ancient stories prominently featuring the kantele. The Latvian ensemble Ilgi rounds out the evening of music Äfrom the fringesÄ.

Happy St. Pat’s! We squeezed in a couple appropriate tunes, as well as some Brazilian music I picked up at the Jazz Records store in Chicago over the weekend. New music highlights this week were The Black Hollies, Patty Larkin, shredding blues guitar from Eddie The Chief Clearwater, and guest David Levin came in for some pop-rocking in the 8:00 hour with his new album, Criminal.
