Johnny Winter called in from someplace on the road on his way to Kansas City. We chatted with Johnny and his producer Paul Nelson. Their cellphone crapped out a few times, but we weaved our way thru the interview. Ah, the beauty of live radio.

Teague Alexy stopped into the studio with his new CD “This Dance” in hand. We played a couple tracks from it plus Teague performed a few tunes live in the studio.

I also played a couple tracks by Leon Helm, who passed away the next day. “Rain Down Tears” was from his 1977 release Levon Helm & The RCO All-Stars, an album I play often on the show. Another track by Levon was “When I Go Away”, an especially moving piece from his Electric Dirt release of 2009.

Also, we played a track from Muddy Waters Woodstock Album, on which Levon played drums and bass.

Next week, we’ll have an interview with Charlie Parr.

In celebration of upcoming Record Store Day, Hymie’s co-owner Laura Hoenack joined Spin with Cyn, spinning songs from artists performing their RSD Block Party. I spun artists performing around town and special new releases.

The Pop Shop is a flutter for Record Store Day 2012! Saturday can’t come soon enough, so in the meantime we’ll play favorites from last year’s RSD, plus recent acquisitions to the Lincoln Terrace music library and new music by the Honeydogs, Shiny Lights, Willie Wisely Trio, Smash Palace and more.

The St. Paddy’s Day Hoot for Slim
Produced by Tom Garneau with production assistance by Nancy Sartor

Recorded in March at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul, the St. Paddy’s Day Hoot for Slim was curated by local musician and writer Jim Walsh, who’s been hosting the Mad Ripple Hootenanny for years. Last month he organized this special event for a man and local musician known as “everybody’s friend.”

Bob “Slim” Dunlap played with the Replacements and released two solo CDs, “Times Like This” and “Old New Me.” Earlier this year Slim suffered a stroke, and is currently recovering. Live from Minnesota presents the St. Paddy’s Day Hootenanny for Slim, with performances by Gini Dodds, Frank Randall, Katy Vernon, Jen Markey, Joe Fahey and Ben Glaros.
