This program presents Trío Calaveras and María de Lourdes, from Mexico. From Peru, Susana Baca and Nicomedes Santa Cruz and, from the Latin American Southern Cone, some examples of the “Payada” tradition. The literature/language section presents “Cantinflas”, or the art of masking language —and being hilarious in the process.
Yusuf Shalita from Marimba Africa joined us today to talk about the band’s upcoming residency at Ras Ethiopian Restaurant in St. Paul. (They’re also going to be opening for and playing with Samba Mapangala at the Cedar on August 13.) We also heard a typically eclectic mix of music including songs from Cape Verde, Angola, Cameroon, Kenya, Mali, and Senegal, along with a brand new track from the Addis Acoustic Project, a group of top musicians playing acoustic versions of Ethiopian popular songs of the 50’s and 60’s.
Kristina de Sacramento webcasts the first snippet of a long conversation with local guitarist/composer Ben Abrahmson. Tune in and you will also hear some of the most obscure cantes de ida y vuelta yet played on this show!
As usual, something for everybody in the Echo Chamber…starting off with a cool new dub from Ital Roots Players, followed by new music from The Angel, I.vette, Process Rebel, Juakali, Copia Doble Systema, Mahom, and Easy Star All Stars. As part of our summer mix series we included an excellent mix from Saetchmo called Short Trip Into Space and Back.
When Swiss took over in the 4:00 hour, listeners found out why It’s Fun To Listen To YMCK…and their cheesy-cute 8-bit video arcade chiptune/dancehall (“chiphall?”) riddim “Collect The Wind – Happy End”, kicking off a set that reintroduces the world to Grace Jones via her new “Hurricane/Hurricane Dub” dubble CD. Also in the set, new artist (to us) Diva, along with Rico, Tsuyoshi Kawakami and Dub Syndicate.
Tonight’s guest is Jan Dolphin, who has written a charming and useful new guidebook to Paris, Paris From the Heart. The guide includes an introduction full of tips to the visitor along with five booklets, each covering a walking tour of a specific area of interest. Each booklet concludes with a list of restaurants nearby. Jan speaks of how and why she wrote this guide. She also includes great photos and past illustrations of Paris.
