There’s been a surge of powerful music from the sub-Sahara in the last few years and one of the finer pracitioners is the Malian group Terakaft. We heard a cut from their new CD Aratan N Azawad on today’s African Rhythms, along with new music from Karl Hector the Malcouns, a track from the forthcoming K. Frimpong his Cubano Fiestas vinyl reissue and much more.
This program is a rebroadcast of our second show, an homenaje to our local treasure, flamenco singer María Elena La Cordobesa. The show features an interview with the late La Cordobesa and different sections of various flamenco masses.

Tonight we debuted the new Kevin Kinsella album “Great Design” (out on ROIR 6/28) – an excellent, eclectic mix of reggae, alt-folk, and rock. Also new tonight: the “Fire In The Hole Meets Zion Train” EP (Universal Egg); “General Smiley meets McPullish at Dub Cove” (Charlie’s); and more from Prince Blanco, AB2G, Lee “Scratch” Perry (with Bill Laswell), Jaja Matsimela, and Turban.
Tonight’s guest is Nathalie Joly who will speak about the International Institute’s upcoming gala, which will have a French theme. Major entertainers (Phil Brunelle, Vocal Essence, Maria Jette) will delight the guests as they dine on escargots, a wide variety of meats, salads, French pastries and desserts. The evening will include an auction of fantastic gifts: trips to Florida, stays in France, wine selections and others. All this to raise funds for the International Institute.
