8/18 in a nutshell…
Skaravan! We’re all caught up on ska versions of the famous Ellington/Tizol number, and we so GotchaSKAvered that we were able to lay 3 of ‘em on ya this week, with two more coming your way next week to wrap up August. In 4(+1)@4 territory, Ska-By-Accident (or was that Default?) was the order of the week, as the characteristic offbeat found its way into the work of artists more typically found in Sherwood B. Funn’s playlist. Speaking of Mr. Funn, the highlight of ye olde middle hour was a Yukimi Nagano tribute set encompassing 5 different recording artists whose releases she’s appeared on, including her own Little Dragon, and Koop.‘s breakout Summer Sun which introduced Nagano to the world. In the Ooh (which I neglected to introduce as such on the air this week, oops), you’ll find, among others, the guy we in the RSST like to call Neil Ska-daka, inviting all within earshot to learn to Do The Jellyfish. This has now seen release on vinyl ep for the first time ever… I’m gonna have to get this thing for myself just to hear if it’s sourced from the Sting Of Death movie or (hoping, hoping) the actual master tape of the studio session at which the song was cut!
That would be really swella…

No, Not The Stones….It's RUBEN.

It's hard to deny, this band, playing all original material, has that Rolling Stones sound to it. Very talented, great sense of humor. They heated up Studio Five. Give a listen on our FOREVER archives here:   https://archive.org/details/60Ruben

A few songs to note the passing of Frank Foster a few weeks ago, as well as classic tunes from Jack McDuff, Milt Jackson Ray Charles, and a couple of songs from Twin Cities Artists playing at a benefit for James Marentic. Closed with a fun song from Mark Winkler.

8/11 in a nutshell…
Yeah, we promised you 2 Skaravans for GotchaSKAvered this week, but the little buggers have been pretty elusive, and we’ll be lucky to find a month’s worth… but at least we got in the Jazz Jamaica version this week, and title track to the album yet! (Q.: Can we count that as two? A.: Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!) Oh, well… Skaravan followed hot on the heels of a 4(+1)@4 set of ’90s ska to commemorate the RSST turning 12 at some point during this summer… Once-upon-a-time arcade rat Sherwood B. Funn snuck in 2 doses of chip-swingers YMCK as well as back-to-back trax from Stereolab side-project Turn On. The Ooh (remember, that’s what we’ve decided to call the Opening Oldies Hour – O-O-H, see? Next week, we’re gonna try that name out on the air! Ooooooh!!!) – anyway, the Ooh contained 4 oldies in a row with Ska in the title, and two more just before Sherwood. Ooooooh!!!
