Tonight the good doctors of dub presented a very cool special entitled Japan Loves Reggae. Of course we played a number of tracks from Dry Heavy, Mute Beat, Little Tempo, and Likkle Mai. But we also aired some new artists that have never been played on the Echo Chamber — like Mantis, Fishmans, Bagdad Cafe the Trench Town, and Dubsensemania. Also, for ambience we had a bit of traditional Japanese music (overlayed and for seques), clips from Godzilla, a theme song from the Hamtaro anime series, and a nice jingle from Likkle Mai herself. Konichiwa!

The distinct and fabulous halves of BeatrixJAR:http://www.beatrixjar.com were my guests this morning to talk about the Spark Festival:http://www.spark.cla.umn.edu, a 6-day multi-venue display of local, national, and even international (Amsterdam!) talents in electronic music and art. How do you define electronic music and art? We got a little talky in the first half of the 8:00 hour as we went through some of its incarnations: sound appropriation, audio collage, sound art, circuit-bending, looping…it goes on, but we wrapped it up and got back to the music. Eventually.

To get in the mood for the Valentine’s Day weekend, Dr. StrangeDub DJ Baby Swiss presented the LOVE DUB special. Lotsa sweet, sweet l-o-v-e in Dub. Of course, we covered not just the ecstasy of the love groove, but also the loneliness of yearning for love, and the bitter disappointment of losing love. We hit all the bases…with the sweet reggae and dub sounds of the Echo Chamber.
