First day of Spring Pledge Drive; joining Doug were Dale Loomer, J. Otis Powell, and near the end Charlie Sugnet. HIghlights include previews of upcoming performances in-town by David Broza, Sierra Leone Refugee All-Stars, Paris Combo, and a review of Meklit Hadero’s third visit to Mpls. All sandwiched between some fine pledge rapping to kick it off. Check it out and don’t forget to renew or become a KFAI listener-member for the first time !

Today’s entire program honors the life and work of Imamu Amiri Baraka with guest dj J Otis Powell. Check out the deep tracks and Word driven by jazz energy. After 2 tracks from Cedric Watson to get ourselves settled, Sha’ Cage speaks of the event April 12 at the Capri Theater to honor and amplify his energy, co-sponsored by KFAI. A fascinating visit w/ these two spoken word artists who learned of his passion right alongside the Jersey State Poet Laureate, Amiri Baraka. Also includes J Otis with his live in-studio reading/performance. Besides Amiri we hear from Monk, Coltrane, David Murray, Sekou Sundiata, & Curtis Mayfield

Opening today’s show with Kiev, Ukraine’s Dakha Brakha… three tracks to bring on home the struggles of another place. And then again back to the past — echoes of Medieval Spain & remnant songs of another time. After a good round of Spain’s varietals – on to classics from the southwest US, central Mexico and Puerto Rico with the local group from year’s past “Proyecto La Plena”.

Fresh from dancing to Cedric Watson & his Bijou Creole, I had to start off the show with a taste of his latest “Le Troubadour Creole”. But the show goes on to Spain, pre-columbian and multicultural then North Africa, before ending with a salute to Paco de Lucia, and a song from Ukraine to end the show.

Minna subbed for Doug, spinning 2 full hours of female artists in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day (March 8). The first hour included everything from a young Filipino-American hip hop artist to Russian disco pop to club mbalax. In the second hour, we dipped into some 1960s East Asian psych rock, bhangra bass, pop music from the DRC, and more!

2/26/2014 Global Beat

Dale Loomer substitute DJ. Songs in five languages. Requests were for Paco DeLucia and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff tracks were back-to-back classic vinyl. Susheela Raman’s – Music for Crocodiles was my personal favorite new (at least new to me) song of the week.

2/19/2014 Global Beat

First hour features a setlist honoring Black History Month; some of the artistry which has inspired me… outspoken artists I admire. The second hour features an in-studio visit from Israeli Ladino musicians – Baladino, playing the Dakota this Sat. Feb. 22.
