Freewheelin' 1st Friday Presents: Steve Kaul & the Brass Kings plus Dave Babb & Friends

Friday, May 2, 2014 - 7:00pm

Jackson Buck’s Freewheelin’ First Friday @ Harriet Brewing
Steve Kaul & the Brass Kings with Special Guests Dave Babb & Friends

Steve Kaul & the Brass Kings play their old-time instruments in very unexpected ways. With metal-bodied resophonic guitars, washtub bass, washboard and fiddle they chart the bermuda triangle of old-time, middle-eastern and bluegrass music. Shifting from jug-band chugging into wild improv-isational ragas they blend folk music traditions into a pulsing groove. Their debut The Brass Kings made several top ten list of best cd’s of 2006. Their second cd, Washboard Rope Guitar, made the Minneapolis Star Tribune top 10 list in 2008. Live Humdinger, released in 2010 features live concert recordings from the Cedar Cultural Center and includes guest artists “Baby” Grant Johnson, Jon Rodine, Dave Babb, Jayathe Kyle and Nate Sipe (Pert Near Sandstone). Machine (2012), is a ten song collection of studio recordings this time featuring fiddle player Jillian Rae as well as guest artists Tony Glover, Jon Rodine, Dave Babb and Nate Sipe. Steve Kaul fingerpicks on metal-bodied resonator and acoustic guitars. Using a variety of open tunings, he blends country- blues fingerpicking with world-music influences.

Tune in to Freewheelin' on Wednesday afternoon from 2:00-4:00.  Steve Kaul & the Brass Kings will be Jackson's guests and will be performing live in the KFAI studio.
