Bill Frisell's Big Sur Quintet – at the Cedar
Sunday, December 8, 2013 - 7:30pm
KFAI is proud to sponsor Bill Frisell’s Big Sur Quintet at the Cedar Cultural Center on Sunday, December 8, at 7:30 pm.
In 2012, guitarist Bill Frisell was commissioned by the Monterey Jazz Festival to write the completely original Big Sur, a work that blends chamber jazz, country, classical, folk, and rock.
About his experience creating Big Sur, Frisell said, “It was extraordinary. You're surrounded by forest, and there's a trail that you can walk to the end of the bluff, where the land just drops off and you see the whole panorama of the Big Sur coast and the Pacific Ocean... It was incredible... I filled up pages and pages... The music just kept coming.”
The quintet features Bill on guitar, with violinist Jenny Scheinman, violist Eyvind Kang, cellist Hank Roberts, and drummer Rudy Royston.
Frisell said, “It's only five of us, but it’s either super-intimate, or very huge and orchestral. The possibilities are gigantic."
