While inclusion has grown across many occupational fields, women have remained stuck for three decades at roughly 2.5% of the construction workforce, despite federal regulations, issued in 1978, that should have led to the industry’s workforce now being 25% female. What would it take to address gender barriers –– treat workers on equal terms –– and finally move that decimal point? Susan Eisenberg, one of the first women in the country to earn journey level status as a union electrician, will frame the civil rights effort to open construction industry careers to women, using images from On Equal Terms, her touring mixed media art installation that recently exhibited at the Smithsonian-affiliated Michigan State University Museum. A panel discussion with women working in the Twin Cities construction trades will follow her presentation.
