Language Central, the newest and only private Adult language school in NE Minneapolis, opens its doors on September 26th to show off its newly restored classrooms and begin registration for English (ESL) and Spanish classes.
The school is a non-profit serving a number of large immigrant communities. Latinos, Somalis, Hmong, and other smaller groups have settled in what has been a traditionally immigrant area of Minneapolis. The focus of ESL classes will be to help immigrants adjust and achieve their personal goals in all situations. These will include the workplace, the schools where their children attend, government services, social and political settings.
The school will also teach Spanish, medical Spanish, and coordinate Study-Travel Programs. The goal for the Spanish classes offered will be for native English speakers to learn enough Spanish to socialize as well as work appropriately with Latinos in hospitals, clinics, schools, and other workplaces such as restaurants and construction companies. Eventually, the school hopes to add a Somali language teacher.
There will be classes Monday through Saturday. Fees will be $20.00 per class but a sliding fee scale and full scholarships will also be available.
Instructors Lynn Olson (English) and Teresa Schweitzer (Spanish and English) will be at the Open House to greet and help register new students.
