2 of the 15 defendants being targeted with trumped up riot charges facing up to 2 years in jail won a plea deal for a petty misdemeanor that only carried a $78 fine today! Keep up the pressure everyone!
9/19 UPDATE: Great news: This morning Nick Espinosa and Matthew Van Grinsven were set to go to trial for gross misdemeanor riot charges, and four other misdemeanors that carried up to 2 years in jail and a $7,000 fine. These charges were th...
e result of us sitting down and defending the Cruz family's home from a fraudulent foreclosure. The two defendants walked out of the courtroom with a plea for a petty misdemeanor. No conditions. No community service. Just a $78 fine.
This comes after the prosecution swore that none of us would get anything less than a misdemeanor, and tried to intimidate us to take a bad deal that would limit our ability to protest in the future by escalating our charges to ridiculous proportions.
Because we stood together, and because so many of you stood with us mobilizing hundreds of calls to Mayor Rybak and City attorney Susan Segal on our behalf, we were able to get an amazing deal that doesn't limit our ability to continue organizing and fighting for other families.
Thank you for standing with us. Today we set a great precedent for the other cases, but we have to keep the pressure on to make sure the other arrestees get the same deal as we did!
Onward to victory for the Cruz family, and for the courageous arrestees who defended their home!
