The Ongoing Struggle for Equity in Higher Education in MN
Hosted by Shannon Gibney & Danielle Mkali
Minnesota has some of the worst educational racial disparities in the country for African Americans and people of color. Specifically in terms of local colleges and universities, African Americans are enrolling at record numbers, but not completing. Professors, administrators, and employees of color at many of these institutions do not find them hospitable, and as a consequence, many leave -- a fact that many studies have tied to low student persistence and completion. Shannon Gibney, Professor of English at MCTC, and Danielle Mkali, community organizer and co-founder of the new group Higher Education Justice MN, will discuss the current state of affairs, challenges, bright spots, and opportunities for positive and sustainable change.
